How Do You Get Break MP Limit in Final Fantasy X?

Break MP Limit is an ability that can be customized onto armor by using x30 Three Stars items.

This ability allows a character’s maximum MP to exceed the natural 999 cap and go all the way up to 9999.

Just note that you won’t hit 9999 MP automatically from the sphere grid, so you’d need to grind MP spheres to push any character up to that limit.

How Do I Get Three Stars?

Three Stars can be obtained in a variety of ways, but we’ll cover the most practical methods here.

There are two side quests that give you a bunch Three Stars as rewards:

The first is completing the Chocobo Race minigame at Remiem Temple with five chests collected.

And the second side quest is simply unlocking Earth Eater at the Monster Arena.

Both of these quests reward you with x60 Three Stars, so be sure to use some of your Three Stars between side quests – that way you don’t exceed the ninety-nine limit and lose out on stars!

Earth Eater is unlocked after unlocking any two other Area Conquests fiends.

And truthfully, x120 Three Stars is probably more than you’ll ever need. But there are other methods to farm them if you do need extra:

If you have lots of money, you can bribe Behemoth Kings in the final dungeon with 1,687,500 gil for 14 Three Stars. This is efficient, but you’ll have to both have access to the final dungeon and have lots of money to spend.

The most reliable long-term way to farm Three Stars is by getting them one at a time from Catoblepas.

It has x1 Three Stars as a common drop (~80% chance).

Catoblepas is unlocked after capturing one of every fiend on Mt. Gagazet. There are 11 different varieties for you to abduct. Lucky!

  • Bandersnatch
  • Grat
  • Bashura
  • Grenade
  • Splasher
  • Achelous
  • Maelspike
  • Ahriman
  • Grendel
  • Mandragora
  • Behemoth
  • Dark Flan

The slowest method for farming is to steal Three Stars from Jormungand or Shinryu at the Monster Arena, with both of them offering x1 Three Stars per swipe.

Keep in mind that Three Stars are their rare drop (25% chance) so be sure to have Master Thief ability when you go for them.

Jormungand is unlocked after capturing one of every fiend on the Djose Highroad. There are 7 in the area:

  • Garm
  • Simurgh
  • Bite Bug
  • Snow Flan
  • Bunyip
  • Basilisk
  • Ochu

Shinryu is unlocked after two of each of the underwater fiends on Mt. Gagazet is captured. There are only three types, and they all live in the cave section:

  • Splasher
  • Achelous
  • Maelspike

Is Break MP Limit Worth It?

Hahaha, no.

It’s a widely accepted FFX fact that Break MP Limit is an absolute waste of an ability slot.

The fact of the matter is that in the late and endgame, MP becomes almost a non-factor. Not only are MP restoratives easily accessible, but those that would need MP (primarily Yuna and Lulu) have One MP Cost naturally on their Celestial Weapons.

And if you don’t want to get Lulu’s Celestial Weapon (you know why) then you can customize One MP Cost yourself with x20 Three Stars.

Yes, that’s right!

For less than what it costs to customize Break MP Limit, you can just make all spells cost one MP, which is way more efficient.

Leave Break MP Limit where it belongs: in your memory.

Send it to the Farplane!
