Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion was one of the more ambitious games of its time.

The premise makes for some epic gameplay where the possibilities are endless, as you find yourself fighting for control over the different planets and star systems.

And the game’s mod community is a testament to how well the game holds up even today, as many creators are still actively updating mods.

Maybe you’re revisiting this title, or coming at it with fresh. Either way these mods are sure to keep you hooked on Rebellion for hours at a time.

20. Infinite Space

Infinite Space Mod For Sins

The first mod we’re going to be looking at might seem like a simple one based on its description.

While Infinite Space’s introductory lines read that it’s “mainly a visual mod”, it definitely gives you more than just a graphics upgrade.

With this mod installed you’ll be getting over 70 different planet types, including all planets from our own solar system as well.

The mod even adds 6 completely new planet types that will be unlockable through research, giving you so much more to explore.

19. Distant Stars

Distant Stars Mod For Soase

Up next is probably the most obvious entry on this list, as Distant Stars was at one point one of the most-played Solar Empire mods.

This has been around for so long that it’s been migrated quite a few times. And while it isn’t easy to find – fans are still looking for where they can get themselves a copy to this day.

Its features are divided into two categories where enhancements include music and sound replacements, planetary abilities, game optimizations, and several gameplay tweaks.

On the other hand, the pack also includes a few original features like new celestial bodies, graphics enhancements, and added visual effects as well.

18. Enhanced 4X Mod

Modder GoaFan77’s explanation really best describes what you get here:

“Sins of a Solar Empire is often described as a 4XRTS game, or a game that tried to merge the action and tactics packed gameplay of a Real time strategy game with the deep, complex, empire wide strategy of a 4X turn based game. It’s up to debate whether Sins succeeded in this goal, but I think all can agree that of the 4Xs of “explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate”, Sins is much more focused on the exterminate than on the others. This mod seeks to give more depth to the other 3Xs of the game by adding additional game elements or refining the existing ones to reward players who give more strategic thought to the non-combat side of the game.”

That said, the mod aims to add depth to the exploration and expansion aspects of the game through a ton of new features. Well worth trying.

You’ll find that while combat is still the biggest factor among the 4 X’s, exploration and non-violent systems like diplomacy and economy will have expanded paths as well.

17. Crazy

Crazy Mod For Soase Rebellion

Crazy is one of the more interesting mods on the list, which you can probably already tell from the title alone.

The mod’s name comes from how it changes gameplay mechanics to make for an overall more intense, action-packed Sins experience.

They achieve this through rebalances like improved research trees, increased AI difficulty, and stronger titans and pirates.

Included as well is a modified version of Bailknight’s Graphic Effects Mod which is also seen in Distant Stars, new planet types, modified victory conditions, and new music and sound effects to match.

16. Sins of the Fallen

Mods are a great way to expand on what the base game already offers as well, as sometimes fans feel that they never really get the official expansions they were hoping for.

Sins of the Fallen is a great example. It’s one of the most fleshed-out mods you can get for SoaSE.

In addition to modified versions of the original three races, the mod introduces four completely new ones to explore as well.

With the new races comes a whole new host of options when it comes to gameplay as each race has their own strengths and weaknesses to consider.

Overall, Sins of the Fallen is a one of the best expansions you can get for the game. It’s sure to give you hours of eyeballs glued to the monitor.

15. Sins Dark Reavers Mod

Having three completely new races to explore can be quite overwhelming… so the Dark Reavers Mod only introduces one.

But it’s a doozy.

Originally based on the Advent race, the Dark Reavers eventually evolved into a completely unique race, giving you a completely new faction to play as.

The Dark Reavers’ features a completely unique research tree, custom ships, models, textures, and sounds as well.

14. Maelstrom

If more than one new race is actually what you’re looking for, then let’s take a look at another large expansion mod.

Besides the original TEC, Advent, and Vasari, you’ll be able to play as the pirates of the Trade Alliance, the artificial non-humanoid Replicators, or the peaceful Normalins.

Each of the three new races feature their own unique traits, as well as original research trees to reflect their individual strengths and weaknesses.

Other than the races, the mod adds loads of new content as well in the form of new planets, stars, models, sounds, and models among others.

13. Legend of the Galactic Heroes – Sea of the Stars

While TV and film are common sources of inspiration for modding, this next add-on takes from one of the most unlikely of places – Japanese anime.

It brings the anime series Legend of Galactic Heroes to the world of SoaSE, allowing you to play as either the Galactic Empire or Free Planets Alliance as seen in the show.

Gameplay changes are made as well, placing even more emphasis on combat so research, economics, and diplomacy become less important.

12. Sins Of the Younger Races

Babylon 5 is another popular reference in the world of SoaSE modding, as there have been plenty of mods based on the 90’s American space opera.

As expected, the mod’s playable races are taken directly from the series.

These include 6 playable races – the Minbari, Earth Alliance, Narn, Centauri, Shadows, and Vorlon.

Featured as well are major Babylon 5 technologies like jumpgates, as well as research trees to match the theme.

11. Fall of Kobol

Fall Of Kobol Mod

Moving us forward into the 2000’s, Battlestar Galactica fans have taken part in SoaSE modding.

It’s basically crossover city over here!

While Fall of Kobol creates a Battlestar Galactica game within SoaSE, some reviews read that this is the only Battlestar Galactica game out there – and that the modders did a fantastic job at transforming the world into an immersive BG experience.

I’d have to agree.

BG fans seem to love the mod, and being integrated into SoaSE gameplay, you can’t go wrong with this one.

10. Stargate Invasion

There are a lot of branches within the Stargate universe alone, and this mod takes them all and combines them into one coherent package.

You’ll be able to take your pick between your favorite Stargate factions including Tau’ri, Asurans, Goa’uld, Wraith, or Asgard.

Stargate Invasion includes custom models, abilities, research, and music+sounds as well to match.

9. Ages Of the Federation

If we’re looking into mods for a space-based game, we’re going to see some Star Trek mods.

After going through the mod lists, I was able to come across three Star Trek mods worth checking out – Ages Of the Federation being the first of them.

Ages Of the Federation recreates a particular era of Star Trek canon, covering The Four Years War.

With that, you’ll be playing either as the Klingons and the United Federation in one of the biggest conflicts in the Star Trek universe.

What’s even better is that it was just released a few months ago, and it promises to be the first in a series – giving us even more Star Trek era content to look forward to.

8. Star Trek: Armada III

Star Trek: Armada Iii Mod

Check Out This Mod

While Stellar Parallax’s most recent effort has received much attention, this is simply because this isn’t their first Star Trek mod for SoaSE.

Back in 2016 they released Star Trek: Armada III, which isn’t just recognized as one of the best Star Trek mods for SoaSE, but also one of the best overall for the game.

This time we’re taken to the beginning of the Dominion War, with five unique factions available to play as.

You’ll be able to experience the war as either the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, the Romulan Star Empire, the Cardassian Union/Dominion Alliance, or the Borg Collective in an epic Star Trek campaign based around one of the major interstellar conflicts in the Star Trek timeline.

7. Star Trek: Sacrifice of Angels 2

Star Trek: Sacrifice Of Angels Mod

Check Out This Mod

Sacrifice of Angels was released way back in 2013.

But it was most recently updated in late 2019, which basically tells you two things.

First: that people enjoy it enough to continue to support it up to now, and second, the developers are serious fans.

As with the previous mods, Sacrifice of Angels 2 features custom factions, research, and events based on Star Trek. So Trekkies are bound to love this one.

6. Star Wars: Interregnum

Star Wars: Interregnum Mod For Soase

Check Out This Mod

Let’s avoid the whole Star Wars vs. Star Trek argument, but I’m including three Star Wars mods here as well – simply because they’re all worth checking out.

Star Wars: Interregnum is the newest of the three.

It received a lot of attention during its development stage, as it promised a Star Wars game based on the Enhanced 4X mod mentioned earlier.

Instead of simply overhauling the game into a Star Wars story, the mod integrates Star Wars into SoaSE, creating a unique crossover between the two worlds.

5. Sins of a Galactic Empire

Sins Of A Galactic Empire Mod

Check Out This Mod

Sins of a Galactic Empire is a much older Star Wars mod, but is still very much alive today.

It was even awarded Editor’s Choice for Mod of the Year back in 2015.

SoaGE takes Star Wars quite seriously – staying within canon as much as they possibly can.

This makes for an authentic Star Wars experience that will be familiar to most fans, making for a mod that’s bound to keep your attention.

In addition to the Star Wars content, Sins of a Galactic Empire makes changes to the gameplay to place more emphasis on realism – making for a unique SoaSE experience overall.

4. Star Wars: Thrawn’s Revenge II: Ascendancy

Star Wars: Thrawn's Revenge Soase

Check Out This Mod

Thrawn’s Revenge Development Team isn’t new to Star Wars modding as they brought us Thrawn’s Revenge: Imperial Civil War for the 2006 Star Wars RTS Empire at War.

This time taking a shot at creating a new Star Wars mod for SoaSE, Thrawn’s Revenge II: Ascendancy takes place right after the events of the original film trilogy.

The Battle of Endor has just ended and it’s up to you to see how the events that follow will play out.

3. Sins of the Prophets

Our space-related knowledge doesn’t end with Star Trek or Star Wars.

Modders have taken inspiration from many other space-based video games as well.

Sins of the Prophets sees SoaSE crossing over with the Halo universe this time, throwing in some familiar Halo characters like Fleet Admiral Lord Terrence Hood, Vice Admiral Preston J. Cole, and Vice Admiral Stanforth.

The mod takes from other Halo games as well, introducing a leader-based research system similar to that seen in Halo Wars.

2. Dawn of the Reapers

Dawn Of The Reapers Soase

Mass Effect is another wildly popular space-based series that has gotten a feature in SoaSE.

Dawn of the Reapers attempts to bring Mass Effect into SoaSE with a completely overhauled storyline, new factions, models, effects, and an updated UI as well.

The mod follows a plot based on the ME series where the reapers have returned from dark space, and it’s up to you to determine what the outcome will be.

1. Warhammer 40k: Time of Ending (BFG)

Warhammer 40K: Time Of Ending In Soase

Check Out This Mod

What better game to merge with SoaSE than Warhammer 40k?

It’s a perfect match if you think about it.

The large-scale battles mixed with the mechanics of the original tabletop game – instant fun.

Just a note here: this mod is far from complete, at least that’s true as of this writing.

But if you’re a fan of Warhammer I still think you’ll be pretty darn pleased.
